Christmas Tree Hunting

Last Saturday we finally headed out to a tree farm to pick out a, yeah you guessed it, a tree, to be decorated, swooned over and for it to drop needles all over my floor, become a watering hole for our cats and a place for Ruby to sleep under. Usually we will find a tree on our property to chop down but this year there was slim picking and I had my heart on a fat, fluffy tree, not a Charlie Brown type. While it sure is a pain in the arse to bring the tree into our house and spend hours untangling lights only to have them flicker and die after they are hung, then hang ungoshly amounts of ornaments that have accumulated over the years, it completes the final Christmas decor. Not to mention it smells so heavenly.

We headed to a friend's tree farm where the kids were overwhelmed in their choices of trees to choose from. There were so many nice ones! And it was cold, so very cold I tell you. Even though we were all bundled up, I debated just going back to my truck to warm up. But that would be a bad mom thing to do. Wimpy too. I can't be a wimp in times like these. Besides, who would capture these moments?

Mini Me shouted over and over "There is one, over there, here is one!" Overwhelmed, very much so.

Yooper pulls Yooper Jr. to his side, wraps his arm around him and says "Son, look to the trees, not the forest, and you will find thee one."

"Huh? WAAA?? Mom, what is Dad trying to say?" Son, it is okay, I deal with his philosophical nature on a daily basis. Just pass it on as advice.

I tell Yooper Jr. to brush off the tree branches so I can see the "whole picture" of how the tree will look without snow on it. There is that philosophical thinking again, I think.

Mini Me has found a tree! A good one, no great and we decide after a half hour of treading through two feet of snow and zero degree wind chills that this will be the tree for our 2008 Christmas. Not to mention at this point all of the trees are beginning to look great!

When we realize we have forgotten to grab a saw, we walk back up to our friend's house, find a saw then walk back to our tree and Yooper begins the painstakingly job of sawing the tree down. He's cursing about this time too, wishing for a chain saw to appear.
"Honey, are you getting snow down the back of your neck? Son, shake more snow off the branches! It will cool him off. He's working into a sweat from sawing."

When it is finally cut and falls over it's time to do the dragging.
"Hey Ms. Paparazzi, put that thing away for 9 seconds and why don't you come help us drag this beast!"
Who me? But honey I don't want to miss capturing these splendid family moments together!

Finally Yooper Jr. to the rescue. Even with 11 years of age, he is "strong like bull".

Put those kids to work honey! Make them earn their keep and earn some brownie points from ole Mr. Santa Claus. After a few brownie points later and 5 feet of dragging, I hear whining coming from my kids. I'm sure Santa is watching too, making notes, smiling, and capturing this moment;)

Loverly tree! Looks like a Blue Spruce??? Can not WAIT to get my tree this weekend.

That tree is perfect! Oh, how I miss the days of tree hunting... my family gave up long ago on real trees - for the same reasons you listed! They now have a pre-lit tree that they keep the tinsel on and only need to put the ornaments on it. How boring! :)

Hopefully Alex & I will never, ever fall into this pattern and will follow your lead! Looks like lots of family fun- even if it is cold! brrrr.

Happy Holidays! :)

My son asked if we could get a real tree next year. I said "yes" - it's been years since we went tree hunting - the kids were babies then. We will go a-hunting this time next year. For now, son and dad "assembled" our tree.

Looks like you had fun, albeit cold.

How fun (minus the tree sap and pitch on your gloves, wet snow that falls on you as you saw....) I have done that a few times with friends. Haven't gotten a real tree in some years though. I miss the fresh smell! :(
The only thing about being the paparazzi is there are no pictures of mom in the family tree hunting shots! ;)

haha have you ever seen the movie family vacation? My inlaws watch it every year, and while I happen to think its a little too mature for some audiences there is a part in there just like you family tree hung where they hung the perfect tree...find it...and forget the saw.

Tami, Nothing like the last minute hey? LOL!
Bekah, One of my favorite movies ever! Such a good laugh out loud movie!
As cold as it was, I mean numbing, I can't feel my toes and fingers cold, it was fun! Thank goodness for heated seats in my truck!

What a great tree! It fit into the house and everything?! By the looks of it, it would have took up my entire living room.

Our fake tree drops needles too, whats with that LOL, looks like a great tree! I remember cuting a live tree. We got a fake one cuz we lived in a mobile home. It has become a tradition to put the tree together LOL

It had to be worth braving the cold for those beautiful photos. The one of dad and son together is priceless!

Jules  – (December 18, 2008 at 5:50 PM)

I love real trees. Fake ones kind of defeat the purpose, if you ask me. Besides, you can't fully appreciate it, until you've cleaned up all the needles on a daily basis and watered it, and spilled the water on the floor...well you get the idea. Love the pics.

Great trip to get a tree, I enjoyed it! Mini me is a good tree picker! Wonderful pictures! Surely you have at least one cat that is a tree climber that adds to the excitement! :)

DVM's Wife  – (December 18, 2008 at 10:11 PM)

Our little Miley kitten who is about 6 months now, was expected to be the tree climber since Yooper has yet to remove her front claws. So far she has been very good, curious, but behaving herself(knock on tree trunk wood).
Yes, Jules, I agree. Can't appreciate a real tree until you've cleaned up all the needles, not to mention broken ornaments!

Oh - what a funny and heart-warming post. And glorious photos of blue skies, snow and cold!

It's plus degrees here - grey and wet. How I long for some really cold weather!
