Other Birds in the Sky

This time of year our skies are shared with not only birds of flight, but other means of flight. Jets, planes, helicopters. Beginning in May, air traffic becomes quite congested. By no means as chaotic as Chicago O'hare, but quite interesting.

Our town is home to an air force base. It is shared with our local airport. This time of year the U.S. Air Force decides they have spring fever and thus must make their pilots train mercilessly at all hours of the day.

I've decided I could never be a U.S. Air Force pilot. One, I do not care to fly, second, speed of light scares me, and third, my stomach cannot even handle a children's roller coaster.

This is how my sky looked yesterday. Gray and boring. Except for this large cargo plane that seemed to laugh and tease everyone around as it flew around, and around, and around for hours.

I sometimes heard the theme song from Jaws as it flew up from the trees, circled around, then dove down to its landing depth.

This is a huge plane, jet, tank, fuel burner whatever you may call it. It is hard to truly capture their size and share it with you. I do know there is one quite bigger than this one that will soon vacate our area and practice whatever they practice. Like flying as low as they possibly can without trimming off silos, trees, and rooftops of farm homes. So this one I like to call Jaws Jr.

There is another plane similiar to this one, but much larger, and louder, and brighter. That one I like to call Mother of All Jaws. It is one that loves to fly over our home during the very early morning hours of say.......3 a.m.
That happened last year. I will never forget it either. While sleeping peacefully in my bed alongside Yooper, dreaming of the last few days of freedom I have before school ends, our windows open to sounds of frogs and mosquitoes breeding, along came a roar.
We have two windows next to our bed that face the north skies. It seems all air traffic like to come in from the north and fly over our home. I sometimes think our home is part of their land marked trail. What sounded as a roar also had lights. Lot's of them. Bright and obnoxious.  It woke us both up in such a frenzy. I swear we thought we were about to become a crash landing site. We would soon be splashed across every newspaper and television screen.
Have you ever heard the sounds of a cargo plane's air brakes(if that is what they are called) in full throttle, see bright lights shining towards you through your bedroom windows at 3 in the morning? Do you know the horror that fills your body to see and hear this as this thing is heading straight for your bedroom?  We both scurried out of bed and as silly as this sounds now, ducked. Yes, we both ducked. I think I even recall Yooper yelling "Get down!".  This monster flew so low over our home and headed even lower towards the air base to land.
What the heel had just happened? Was this pilot lost? Was this his first time flying? Had he no sense of height perception? Was he just coming back from the local bar?
I will tell you this. What had just happened was probably one of thee most scariest moments in my life. Yooper too. In the morning I noticed a few more gray hairs sprouting from his head.

So while I am happy that spring is finally here and there are so many signs telling me this, I am dreading the early morning wake up call.

Ruby Tuesday ~ What Breed of Dog Are You?

"Tap, tap, tap........Ahem. Is this thang on??? Cause I have something to tell ya!"

Somehow I got latched on to Facebook. I'm not sure how. Someone is to blame. Oh and Twitter. I Twitter now. I text on my cell phone to update my Twitter, which also updates what I am doing on my Facebook page. Thus the whole "I've Twittered Myself" effect.

I haven't completely figured out Facebook but I do like how I can keep track of people and "spy" on them, hee, hee. Especially my sister. She never emails me, course I rarely email her, so we're even, I guess. But I like to see what she is up to on her Facebook "wall", "profile" whatever you call it. I haven't figured out the whole Facebook lingo yet  I suppose.  I sometimes like to leave her comments and embarass her and remind her I am still her bratty, little sister.

She easily can keep track of what I have been up to on my blog, at least some days. Days I am not on another planet talking about photography or photoshop. Her reading my blog is probably the sole reason she does not email me.

One of my Facebook friends had taken a quiz on Facebook. Facebook has so many of these so-called life quizzes, and many of them are extremely off the wall. I have taken only one, but a few of them caught my interest such as What Is Your IQ, Which Liquor Are You, What Color Are You, What Kind of Driver Are You, Are You a Douchebag(are you kidding me?) What Type of Tattoo Should You Get, What Is the Name of the Man You Will Marry and this one, What Breed of Dog Are You.  That last quiz caught my attention on Sunday morning.
"What breed of dog am I?" HA! This should be fun. I've always wanted to know what breed of dog I am. Okay, maybe that's going a bit far.
So I took it. There were 23 questions. Not 19, nor 25.  Lucky number 23.
Some of the questions went like this:

Which of these statements about life best describes you?
You often contemplate the complexity of life, but try to make the best of it

Being outdoors makes you feel alive and content with life

If you are walking at night and a friend jumps out behind a bush to scare you, you would...
Jump, then tell them to cut it out
Maybe jump at first, then smile and tell them they are being silly
Jump, then try to relax and calm yourself down before getting irritated
Not even be phased by it
Jump, then roll your eyes and shrug it off
Get upset or irrated and walk away
Maybe jump a bit but laugh thinking it was funny
Roll your eyes and walk away with no comment
Jump, then think it was fun and try to

How do you feel about children?
I enjoy them because they love to play and have a good time!

I prefer older
I like them for the most part but I'm not crazy about them
Umm... No thanks... I'll pass

I won't list all of the questions for fear of boring you to death. I also won't let you in on which answers I chose. Because I can't remember half of how I answered them.  I know if I retook this quiz I probably wouldn't be the same breed of dog I was classified as on Sunday. So are you ready for the breed that was chosen for me? I am not making this up.I would never lie to you folks. I answered these questions as honestly as I thought possible. In fact each question really made me think. Course being an early Sunday morning and sipping my first cup of java probably didn't help my thought process too well. Okay, here it is. This is seriously the breed of dog I am.

"Amy completed the quiz "What breed of dog are you?" with the result Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
The breed that best describes you is the Pemrboke Welsh Corgi. You are devoted to the ones you love and are there for them when they need you. You are fun and silly and enjoy making people laugh. You become happy and excited about things quite easily."

And I am still wiping the coffee spray off of my computer monitor that spewed out of my mouth as I read my results.
Destiny? Fate? Rigged quiz?
It's no wonder Ruby adores me so much. She must look at me and see another Corgi. Could it be?

I can haz Cheeze It now?

I Heart Faces - Week 17 - Hats!

Over at I Heart Faces their theme this week is Hats! Put on  a hat to a face and you have a fun prop that will add interest, and a story to your picture.
I didn't search long for pictures of my kids with hats. There are many of them, but this one below stood out in my mind as the one I wanted to use for this week's I Heart Faces contest.

I love the whole Eskimo look my daughter shares with her furry covered hood. Does a hood count as a "hat"? Oh dear.
I love the picture so that is all that counts right?
Anyway, mouse click on over to this site and join in the fun. I Heart Faces has grown by leaps and bounds and I so enjoy visiting and learning a tip or two from their weekly judges or their Fix-it-Fridays. Some outstanding talent I have found! Not to mention there have been some really neat prizes given away.

Sunday Stills

I found another site that offers photo challenges each week, Sunday Stills. This week's challenge is Flowers and Plants. Now that is a challenge in itself. I can't even begin to tell you how painful it is to watch my flowers take their sweet ole time to bloom. Crocuses finally opened up last week as did Daffodils.

Crocuses, while extremely pretty and fun, they do not last long. At least around here. They are my first glimpse at color after viewing a completely gray and white winter. They are a nice change up. They seem to get smushed as well by furry, four legged critters. One I'de rather not mention her name.

Daffodils. Ahhhh, their yellowness is so appealing and happy. They are next in line to another happy flower, the Daisy.
But that is just my opinion and obversation.

I have one patch that blooms as big and full as any other spot. In fact I transplanted this bunch after watching them bloom year after year in the ditch across from our house. They deserved a much better place to live and be adored. No one saw me dig them up and snatch them up.

Do you know which budding tree this is? I won't make you think this Sunday too much. This bud is from one of my lilac trees. Next month they will be in their full glory, filling the air with their perfume aroma of lilac. Mmmmm, love that smell. I wish they would last longer than they do. They are wonderful.

I'm contemplating a macro lens for my camera. While one of my blogging friends has tried what is called a reversing ring, I'm not 85% on that idea yet. But then again, it may be a chance to see if I really like macro photography before dropping $400 plus on a macro lens. The reversing ring ranges anywhere from $12-$40. If you have ever tried one of these cheap fixes leave me a comment with your pros and cons of using it. Otherwise if you fiddle with macro a bit, let me know your favorite lens. I would love to hear.

3 Down, 9 To Go, or 10, 11, 12

Tuesday and Wednesday were a bit of a whirlwind around here. Tuesday night, following Mini Me's softball practice I noticed a cow with an extra set of legs. Sure enough, one of our cows had dropped her calf, or simply meaning, she birthed her child.
A huge calf too! At least 100 pounds of black, furry, cuteness.

She's the cute one standing up behind her little buddy who was born on Wednesday. Just look at that face! She's gorgeous. Did I mention big? She will be a spitting image of her mom when she is full grown. She's out of one of our registered Angus cows, so she will be registered too. Her mama and daddy has passed on some super nice genetics this time around!

What started on Tuesday certainly spread like the flu to a couple other cows and sure enough, Wednesday morning there was another little calf wobbling around.
Later on in the afternoon when Yooper and I were ear tagging the other two baby calves, we spotted another newborn happily sucking down some milk.
Why do we ear tag them? We have to. When you have all black calves born to all black mamas it is our organizational system for keeping track of who belongs to whom. Each calf wears a set of matching ear tags with numbers. The "CC" stands for our farm name, Cornerstone Cattle. While we are no big cattle operating farm, we needed to call Yooper's little hobby something. It fits because our home is made of fieldstone and our property is located near a corner/intersection. And when Yooper started all of this cattle "business", it came at a "cornerstone" in his life. That's right, he had just married me, had bought his first real tractor, had learned how to harvest hay and was thinking in the back of his mind of opening his own practice. It was a major cornerstone for me too. I didn't know I would become not only a vet's wife but also a cattle farmer's wife.

I love taking pictures of these babies when they are so new to life. For about a month they are very cute and then after that they soon become little, mischevious devils. I soon find myself chasing them back into their pastures after they have runeth through our freshly planted garden or have pooed all over my freshly mowed lawn.
While I love to snap pictures of their cuteness, their moms begin hovering over me. Even though I am on the other side of an electrified barb wire fence, the smoke coming out of their nostrils tells me it is time to end my paparazzi time.
Our little bitty herd of cows has 9 more calves to be born. I'm suspecting twins mixed in there at least once. You just never know!
